ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Please remove all paper clips, plastic covers, notebook covers etc. from materials prior to submission. Please do not submit unsolicited or additional materials not requested by the department. We do not accept e-mailed materials.

(Note on Transcripts: please follow the specific instructions on the Graduate School Application.)

In addition to the application and graduate school requirements, the following are required of all applicants:

A typed personal statement.
Please provide the History Department with a 1-2 page typed statement commenting on your background for graduate study and educational/career goals. Please mail to Department of History.
A writing sample.
The Department requires a sample of your work in the form of a term paper or other formal writing. The writing sample is intended to show us your potential as a historian, and it is a very important part of your file. The writing sample ideally will be a historical research paper using primary sources. If not, it should demonstrate that you have the kind of analytical and writing skills that will enable you to handle the demands of our program. It is not necessary to have been a history undergraduate major to be accepted. The writing sample needs to be in English.
Please mail to Department of History.

Three recommendations.
The Graduate School has recently added recommendation submissions to the on-line application. Three recommendations are required. Please do not send us additional recommendations or letters. The first three recommendations received will be accounted for. Recommendation should make a strong case for your ability to succeed in a history graduate program.

You should obtain recommendations from professors who have taught you. Their letters should describe your academic work in detail so that the Graduate Committee can be assured that you can complete a rigorous graduate program. If you have done significant independent research, such as a thesis, the committee normally expects a letter from the professor who supervised that work.

An Assistantship application. You must have Adobe Acrobat reader to print out this form. The form may be completed on-line, then printed and mailed to the Department of History. All applicants are requested to complete this form. You must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4 or 5 to open and print this form. Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free from Adobe at this link. Please mail to Department of History.

A Proposed Study form. Let us know the field of research you are interested in and particular faculty in our department you are interested in working with. Please mail to Department of History. You can check out our faculty listing here.
