Graduate Admissions

The Graduate Application deadline for the 2010-2011 academic year is December 15, 2009 for the receipt of all materials. Applications are accepted for Fall admission only.

The History Department program in graduate studies is highly selective. Even prior to formal application, we encourage you to start an e-mail or phone dialogue with one or two faculty members in your field of special interest (see the "Field" faculty pages for more information). You will need to have at least one faculty member who will be interested in working with you. The Graduate Studies Committee carefully considers all aspects of a candidate's file in making its decision.

Please consult the document "Frequently Asked Questions - Before you apply(FAQ's)" before beginning the application process. Also - our Admissions FAQ's page is very helpful to students in the process of applying to our graduate program.

Only completed applications will be reviewed. A completed application consists of two components: a UGA Graduate School application and materials (sent directly to the Graduate School) and additional materials required by the UGA History Department (which should be mailed to the Department of History). Please DO NOT submit unsolicited materials. Use only plain white regular bond paper for all materials. Do not submit items with folders, plastic covers, large clips, or spiral bound. No email submissions are accepted.

During our busiest application processing period December-January, materials may take 2-3 weeks processing time due to the volume of materials we receive during this busy time. Once processed, applicants are notified by the Graduate School and e-mailed instructions on how to check any updates of the application and materials on-line. History Department offices are closed over the winter holiday season. Materials received after the deadline will be tracked on-line after the holidays in January. (We will date items received as to the postmark.) Please see the Graduate School's web site if you need to contact Graduate School admissions concerning the receipt of GRE scores or transcripts.

!!!IMPORTANT!!!!
**ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION**
In addition to the Graduate School application (which should be sent to the Graduate School), applicants to the History Department graduate program are required to submit the following directly to the History Department (by mail):

  • Personal Statement: A typed, 1-2 page statement explaining your background for graduate study and educational/career goals.
  • Writing Sample: A sample of your written work--in the form of a term paper or other formal writing--must demonstrate your potential as a historian. This is one of the most important parts of your application file. The writing sample ideally will be a historical research paper using primary sources. If not, it should demonstrate that your analytical and writing skills will enable you to handle the demands of our rigorous program. It is not necessary to have been a history undergraduate major to be accepted. The writing sample must be in English.
  • Three Recommendations: The Graduate School has recently added recommendation forms to the on-line application. Three recommendations are required. Please do not send us additional letters or recommendations. The first three received will be accounted for. Recommendations should make a strong case for your ability to succeed in a history graduate program.
You should obtain references from professors who have taught you. Their on-line recommendations should describe your academic work in detail so that the Graduate Committee can be assured that you can complete a rigorous graduate program. If you have done significant independent research, such as a thesis, the committee normally expects a recommendation from the professor who supervised that work. [Further advice on obtaining letters of recommendation]
  • Assistantship Application: This application is available online as a PDF file, which can be completed digitally, then printed and mailed to the Department of History with your other materials. You will need a copy of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this form.
  • Proposed Study Form: The Proposed Program of Study form is available online as a PDF file. Let us know the field of research you are interested in and particular faculty in our department with whom you are interested in working with. Print, fill out, and mail the form to the Department of History with your other materials.
  • Resume/Curricukum Vitae: A resume or vitae is also recomended.
