Dissertations

Completing a dissertation in History at the University of Georgia is a requirement for completing the Ph.D. degree, but it is also a declaration of mastery of the research and writing skills required to be a professional historian. Students who complete dissertations in History at UGA have, in effect, written a "first draft" of a publishable scholarly book, and qualify themselves for faculty positions in post-secondary education. All dissertations demonstrate creativity and insight on the part of the author, while also contributing important knowledge to historical understanding. Some examples of in-progress dissertations and completed dissertations (scroll down to view) by UGA doctoral students are listed below, demonstrating the diversity and strength of the program's research interests and contributions.
