Graduate Student Job Placement
The History Department prepares Ph.D. candidates for placement in the history profession.
Working with their advisory committee and the graduate studies
coordinator, job candidates develop techniques for crafting letters of application,
writing an effective C.V., and compiling a dossier of
writing samples and letters of recommendation. In the teacher training course,
HIST 8001, PhD students learn to write effective statements of
teaching philosophy and sample course syllabuses.
Our Ph.D.s have an excellent placement record, despite the tightness of the job market.
UGA history Ph.D.s hold faculty positions in many major universities; a partial list of recent placements appears below.
Graduates of the UGA program have also developed successful careers in related professional fields, including law,
business, government and education. Of our eighteen graduates from 1990-1997, eleven have obtained tenure-track jobs.
Of our twenty-two Ph.D.s from 1998-2004, two-thirds already have tenure track jobs.
