Chris Manganiello's experiences in the southern Appalachians fostered an appreciation for the region's land and water resources. This led, first, to an article about the history of human and wolf interaction in North Carolina between the colonial period and the recent red wolf restoration. Second, Chris recognized the lack of a good history of the region's water resources. His dissertation, "Dam Crazy with Wild Consequences: Artificial Lakes and Natural Rivers in the American South, 1845-1990," will examine the origins and consequences of the South's modern waterscape. Chris has also co-edited a book, Environmental History and the American South: A Reader, with Paul S. Sutter (University of Georgia Press, 2009).
