Sita Anantha Raman is Associate Professor Emerita, Santa Clara University, California where she taught various courses on pre-modern and modern India, with a special focus on gender, society, culture, religion. She is the author of Getting Girls to School (Stree, 1996), A.Madhaviah: A Biography and a Novel translated by Vasantha Surya (Oxford University Press, 2004); book chapters (Ananya, 1997; Charisma and Commitment in South Asian History, 2004); and journal articles on women and society. Her latest work is Women in India: A Social and Cultural History (Greenwood Press, forthcoming 2008).
