Craig Caldwell researches the origins of the medieval world in the decline of the Roman Empire. He is currently preparing a manuscript on the invasions and transformations of the late Roman Balkans for publication. His article on coinage and loyalty has been published in the edited collection entitled Beyond the Battlefields: New Perspectives on Warfare and Society in the Graeco-Roman World, and he is contributing to the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity. Before coming to UGA, he taught at Furman University in South Carolina
