His books include, William Clark: Jeffersonian Man on the Frontier; (Oklahoma, 1977, paper,1978), Comparative Frontiers : A Proposal for Studying the American West ( Oklahoma, 1980), The Tragedy of Abundance: Myth Restoration in American Culture (Colorado, 1993). Steffen was one of twenty Americans invited to speak at the first American Studies conference ever held in the Peoples Republic of China.
