Honors Faculty Mentor Network FAQ

What is the purpose of the Honors Faculty Mentor Program?
The Honors Faculty Mentor Program provides a "friend on the faculty." The mentor provides a link to the academic life of the university and takes a personal interest in the student. Mentors encourage personal and/or professional development. While styles of mentoring vary according to individual personalities and approaches, having at least one mentor from the start of the undergraduate experience can make a large university feel smaller.

Honors students are expected to have more than one mentor during their Honors experience; however, this mentor is the only one that will be formally arranged through the Honors Program. Students who wish to participate will be encouraged to sign-up for faculty with mutual interests during the first month of the academic year. If you sign up, you will have a responsibility of staying in maintaining good communication with your mentor throughout the year.

How are Honors Faculty Mentors selected for the program?
University of Georgia faculty are nominated based on their outstanding teaching and commitment to undergraduate education. Nominated faculty are invited to become a mentor. The majority of faculty members who are nominated accept the invitation to become a mentor.

Who is eligible to have a mentor?
All Honors first year students are eligible to participate. While participation is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged. This year students will be able to use a web-based system to select professors with whom they share interests. It is not necessary to have a mentor in your major.

How do I choose a mentor?
When possible, students select mentors based on some shared interest. In fact, some very successful relationships develop when a student selects a mentor who shares similar outside interest or is from a department which he or she has an interest but has not selected it is a major. The mentoring relationship should be based on a fundamental interest in the Honor student's academic and personal growth and development, not necessarily limited to interest in a particular major. Students will be advised about the times to apply for a mentor.

How long does the mentoring continue?
The formal part of the Honors Faculty Mentor Program is intended to continue throughout the first year. The Honors Program encourages continued contact between mentees and mentors beyond the first year. Faculty and students may decide that they wish to develop other mentoring relationships without notifying the Honors Program. However, any unsatisfactory relationships should be discussed with Dr. Kleiber.

What if I wish to select my own mentor?
We encourage you to get to know your professors outside of the classroom. The Honors Program encourages students to develop more than one successful mentoring relationship. We feel certain if you participate in this program, it will increase your chances to meet others who you may select as mentors. Because mentoring contributes to success in college and throughout life, the Honors Faculty Mentor Program will provide a good beginning.
