Academic Initiatives
The Department of University Housing's core mission includes creation of residential
communities that nurture and support resident's academic success. To us that means much more
than providing residents with desks and study lounges. In fact, the Department employs a full-
time Academic Initiatives Coordinator whose entire focus is to forge collaborative partnerships
across interdepartmental boundaries that maximize the flow of academic resources to our large
and diverse resident population.
University Housing also actively supports the exchange of ideas and perspectives generated
when visiting students and scholars from around the country and the world come to stay at UGA,
and when our students travel to other institutions.
Some of our most successful academic initiatives and partnerships are highlighted at the University of Georgia's Learning Communities site. Details on specific programs managed by the Department of University Housing can be found at the links below:
Academic Advising: Thousands of students per semester complete academic advising within
their residence halls. Find out how you can participate in this convenient program.
Academic Enhancement: The Division of Academic Enhancement maintains a satellite
office in Brumby Hall that develops and delivers academic workshops, tutoring sessions and
other resident support services.
Creswell Learning Communities: Be one of a select few students to complete intensive
instruction in the fields of Education, International & Global Issues, Science or Social Science!
Franklin Residential College: Faculty and students cohabitate in this learning community
modeled after those found at such venerable ivy-league institutions as the University of Oxford
and Yale University.
Freshman College Summer Experience: Jump start your college career through participation
in this for-credit comprehensive learning experience for first-year students.
Honors Magnet Program: Live within a community of Honors students in award-winning
Myers Hall.
Language Communities in French & Spanish: Immerse yourself in a community packed
with events, activities and fun in the French and Spanish languages.
One World Multicultural Community: Located in Oglethorpe House, residents of this
community are dedicated to learning about and celebrating multiculturalism while forging
connections that stretch across traditional cultural and community boundaries.
Russell Hall Last Lecture Series: The Russell Hall Last Lecture Series was created in Spring 2003 by the Department of University Housing, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and The Division of Academic Enhancement. The residents of Russell Hall nominate their favorite professors, and the professor with the most nominations is invited to Russell Hall to present a lecture, as if it were his or her "last lecture."
Spanish Summer Immersion Program: Participants in this intensive Spanish language community earn credit for two academic courses during the UGA Summer Through Session while living in Soule Hall.
Other Academic Programs: Learn about some of the other programs that promote academic
and personal growth, including Brumby Buddies, Creswell SMARTEES, O-House Study Money
and Russell X.
Visiting Artists & Scholars: The Department of University Housing is allied with several
University of Georgia and state civic organizations to support the exchange of national and
international students to and from Georgia. University Housing also hosts numerous visiting
artists and scholars during both the academic school year and summer months.
