Moving In

What do I need to move into my room?
In order to check-in to your room, each student must have your UGA Card ready. Students should know their student ID number and emergency contact information (Preferably, this should be someone in the U.S.). Only the student can receive a room key; parents cannot check-in to a room and receive a key for a student. Once check-in begins, students can check-in and obtain a key 24 hours a day.

When can I move in?
For complete information on this year's calendar for check in, please consult the Hunker Down with Housing page, located here.

What can I do to make moving in to my room go more smoothly?
Students are encouraged to consider bringing a small cart or dolly. Although in many buildings carts are available, there are only a limited number of carts available for students to use. You might also consider bringing a small tool kit if you have items to put together and a pen for filling out several forms at check-in. Move-in is a busy time in and around the residence halls, please be patient and expect that elevators, parking lots, and hallways will be crowded throughout move-in week. Please place all of your trash in designated locations around each building.

The check-in process varies from year to year and it is difficult to predict when the 'best' days and times are for students to check-in to avoid lines. Check-in lines are typically not as long in the late afternoon or early evenings but again, this may vary from hall to hall. Every effort is made by the Housing staff to minimize delays in the check-in process. You should also expect to receive the Community Guide (which is also a Calendar/Planner), your mailbox combination/key, your room key, and a copy of the Room Inventory Card (this is a form noting the current condition or your room that you should keep for your records). Students also receive a welcome packet containing additional information about the residence hall and other Housing programs. Parents may not check-in for students. Students should present a photo ID (preferably your UGA card) at check-in.

What do I need to bring with me to my room?
Linens are not provided, so you will want to bring your own sheets (see mattress lengths on amenities chart), pillowcases, towels, blankets, and pillows. You and your roommate may want to coordinate bedspreads, rugs and drapes. Often those are chosen once you are here so you can share ideas for colors. If you plan to bring a TV or stereo, be sure to bring a surge protected power strip, and check with your roommate to avoid duplication. Also, you won't want to forget your desk lamp, electric fan, iron, ironing board, clothes hangers, umbrella, alarm clock, and telephone. For more information, about what to bring, please visit the Move In section of the Housing website.

What is the decoration policy? Can I make any modifications to my room?
The condition of the room must be the same at checkout as it is at check-in. Residents should review the online Community Guides for the decorations policies specific to the Traditional and East Campus Village residence halls.

Where can I get a loft? What are the rules concerning lofts and loft construction?
Residents may construct and/or install loft style beds in certain rooms in select residence halls.

Prospective residents should be aware that they are likely to receive unsolicited offers for rental, sale and/or installation of loft systems after being accepted for admittance to UGA. Please be forewarned that the Department of University is in no way allied with or otherwise endorses any third party vendors of this kind. Residents should act with caution, especially with any firm requesting cash deposits in advance of loft delivery/installation.

Please click here for the complete loft construction and use policy.

Do I need insurance for my belongings while living on campus?
The Department of University Housing highly recommends that students obtain some type of renter's insurance whether that be a special policy or as a part of the parents' homeowners policy.

If I have a question about my room and move-in, whom should I be in contact with?
