Diversity Awareness Week at Georgia: D.A.W.G. Days

Diversity Awareness Week at Georgia is an annual celebration of the diversity in our world and on the University of Georgia campus. This week-long series of events and activities was created in the hope of fostering a positive atmosphere in which students, staff and other members of the community could acknowledge differences in people, to learn about those differences, and to gain an appreciation of the benefits these differences bring into our lives. By focusing on and exploring of issues such as prejudice, disabilities, International student cultures, racial and cultural groups, diverse dating, and religious organizations, University Housing seeks to broaden the horizons of its residents and the student body at large.

D.A.W.G. Days Events - RESCHEDULED

The D.A.W.G. Days Committee is pleased to announce that the two programs that were canceled due to inclement weather, have been rescheduled as follows:

Monday, April 6, 2009, at 6:00 PM, in MLC 171
"It's All About Love. Eradicating Hate,"
facilitated by Dr. Dawn Bennett-Alexander

This discussion forum will explore cross-cultural dating. Specifically, we will explore Southern views of inter-racial dating and how they impact views that people date interracially because there is dissatisfaction with dating within one's race. We will also discuss racial stigmas associated with interracial dating and the influence of gender and culture on views of interracial dating. We will explore cultural differences in couples including religion, differences in family of origin, and differences in family traditions and practices.
Additionally, we will talk about knowing one's self as a cultural being and recommendations for healthy relationships.
Objectives: 1. Explore and challenge existing views of interracial dating.
2. Gain a broader understanding of cultural differences including family of origin, religion, and traditions/practices.
3. Gain a better understanding of the our cultural selves in relationships and how to be a healthy person in a relationship.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 6:00 PM, in MLC 102
"What is Love? Baby Don't Hurt Me,"
facilitated by Dr. Deenie Tarver and Reverend Richard A. Washington

We will discuss the avenues and ways to empower students on the UGA campus to find ways to fight and eradicate hate on campus. Through this program, Dr. Bennett-Alexander will have an open discussion with several different ways to addressing hate and how to overcome it on our campus. We will come to a fun, positive, interactive exploration of our attitudes, biases and actions and discuss ways to assist students in becoming positive student activist when it comes to addressing hate.

We will be serving food and handing out D.A.W.G. Days cups and drawstring sacks to attendees.

Everyone is welcome to attend these two exciting programs. Please spread the word to all who may be interested. We hope to see you there!
