Students' rights and responsibilities As a UGA student, you are guaranteed all of the rights, privileges, and freedoms granted to every citizen. However, with these rights come responsibilities. UGA students are expected to abide by all federal, state, and local laws. Alleged violations of these laws may be referred to the appropriate court or law enforcement authority. Violations of applicable laws may also result in UGA disciplinary action. When you enroll at UGA, you assume special responsibility for following the University's conduct regulations, which were adopted to ensure that the University is able to maintain an environment conducive to learning and growth. All residents are expected to know and conduct themselves in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in the University of Georgia Residence Hall Contract, including but not limited to, Section 1A in the "Terms" portion. Further, the University Conduct Regulations are explained in the UGA Student Handbook; it is every student's responsibility to know them. Judicial Procedures All students alleged to have violated housing policies or UGA conduct regulations will be afforded the following judicial process: Step 1: An information report will be completed by a designated member of the housing staff. The student will be asked to sign this report to indicate that he/she has read it; signing the report is not an admission of guilt or responsibility. Step 2: The report is referred to the Area Coordinator, who determines which of two actions to take: a. Refer the matter to a Housing staff member (Graduate Resident, Residence Hall Director, or Assistant Area Coordinator) for possible disciplinary action. b. Refer the matter to a University Judicial Hearing Officer for possible disciplinary action. Area Coordinators, Assistant Area Coordinators, Residence Hall Directors, and other staff members serve as University Judicial Hearing Officers. Step 3: For both options, a meeting will occur among the parties involved. The matter will then be settled by the hearing officer or be referred to a hearing panel to determine whether or not a violation occurred.
