Residence life staff

The Department of University Housing is responsible for all residence hall matters, including student safety and security, physical facilities, staffing, programs, room assignments, budgeting, policy formulation, and hall government advising. The following is a brief overview of the Department's student and professional staff.

Resident Assistants (RA)
Known as RAs, Resident Assistants live with the residents on each floor. These student staff members are selected for their skills, interests, and campus activities, which enable them to help other students get the most from their UGA experience. RAs are trained to assist and/or refer students with academic and personal concerns and to help maintain an educational environment in the halls.

C.L.A.S.S. Advocates (CA)
The "Continuing the Legacy of African American Student Success" (C.L.A.S.S.) Advocate Program responds to the concerns of African American students living on campus. Staffed by 12 live-in C.L.A.S.S. Advocates (CAs), this residence hall program is designed to support and enrich the University experience of African American students and facilitate communication between staff and students. CAs are crucial to the Department's on-going efforts to respond to the needs of students in the residence halls.

Desk Assistants (DA)
Desk Assistants are student workers who man the 24-hour desks in each of the seven residential communities. They are responsible for checking the ID cards of residents, checking out lock-out keys and answering phone calls.

Village Community Assistants (VCAs)
A Village Community Assistant lives in East Campus Village and acts as a resource for all 1200 community residents. Village Community Assistants support students in their development and adjustment to the University and the Community. These student staff members are responsible for assisting in crises management, maintaining safety and security of the community, responding to facility concerns, and staffing the 24-hour front desk.

Graduate Residents (GR)
Graduate Residents are full-time graduate students responsible for the general supervision and management of their assigned residence hall. GRs provide advising and personal/disciplinary counseling for individuals and groups of students, as well as assist in student development programming, facilities management, multicultural awareness efforts, and other special projects.

Residence Hall Directors (RHD)
Residence Hall Directors are full-time, live-in professional staff members who manage a residential area of approximately 500 students. The RHD coordinates educational programs and activities, supervises an RA staff, and is the primary day-to-day administrator of the residence hall.

Assistant Area Coordinators (AAC)
Assistant Area Coordinators are full-time, live-in professional staff members who supervise the front desk and desk assistants, advise community council, supervise the CAs, and assist in the development of academic initiatives for first year students.

Area Coordinators (AC)
The Area Coordinators are full-time, professional staff members who manage a community of approximately 850 to 1,300 students. S/he coordinates educational programs and activities spanning the halls and the University community and is the primary administrator for day-to-day community operations.

Assistant Director for Residence Life
The Assistant Director is responsible for the supervision of the Area Coordinators who oversee the seven residential communities and seventeen residence halls housing approximately 7,200 students, and gives direction to residence life program and student programming efforts.

Associate Director of Residence Hall Education and Services
The Associate Director of Residence Hall Education and Services is responsible for the overall operation of the residence halls. The Associate Director is also responsible for security, fiscal budgeting, and day-to-day maintenance of the residence halls.

Building Services Workers
Building Services Workers are full-time staff members who work to keep the residence halls clean and looking nice.

Central Housing Office
The central housing office, located on the ground floor of the east wing of Russell Hall, is organized into five areas.

Assignments and Contracts: handles assignments, transfers, and cancellations of hall and room reservations.

Residence Hall Education and Services: includes security staff, supervision of day-to-day maintenance staff, supervision of professional, graduate, and undergraduate residence hall staff along with academic initiatives.

Facilities Management: includes the central maintenance shop, supervision of custodial staff, maintenance supervision of on-campus Greek housing and renovations of the residence halls.

Business and Personnel Office: concerned with budgeting and personnel responsibilities.

Staff Development and Judicial Programs: located in the ground level of the north wing of Creswell Hall, this office is responsible for graduate student, support staff, and professional staff development.
