Moving In
General Residence Hall Move-In Information
Arriving residents are encouraged to bring a small cart or hand truck/dolly to
ease the process of moving your stuff through the parking lots, into the halls and
possibly up some staircases. This is especially the case if you planning on
checking in early, when long lines can form at a hall's elevators.
And what kind of stuff should you bring? Your room will be a combination
bedroom, living room and study, perhaps with a corner reserved for a small
snack kitchen. We provide a bed, desk, chair and a dresser or wardrobe. The
rest is up to you. Personal touches are what will make your room feel like home,
so you'll want to come armed with posters, calendars, and other wall hangings.
Just make sure to check our housing
policies for restrictions on wall hangings (page 17 in the traditional guide,
page 22 in the East Campus Village guide).
Then there are the basics, such as sheets, pillowcases, towels, blankets, pillows,
a desk lamp, an iron, clothes hangers and an alarm clock. You and your
roommate may want to coordinate bedspreads, rugs, and drapes ahead of time.
You will also want to discuss who will bring certain appliances so that you don't
end up with two microwaves and TVs but no refrigerator or radio. Residents are
permitted to bring the following electrical items: Underwriter Laboratory (UL)
approved refrigerators, sealed-unit coffee makers, popcorn poppers, hot pots,
crock pots, toasters, and microwaves up to 1.0 cubic feet capacity in size.
Each
room has a single cable television connection for you or your roommate's
television set to University Cablevision, which provides dozens of
channels of high quality entertainment. Each room also has one high speed Internet
connection per resident, but of course you
provide the computers. No residence hall rooms, suites or apartments come equipped with telephones or telephone service, so most residents utilize cell phones to make calls.
Most of the rooms have bunkable bed frames, but students often choose to
construct lofts in room where they are allowed. It is usually best to wait
until you arrive on campus and see if your room is equipped with loftable beds. If it does not have loftable beds, you and your roommate(s) can decide if loft beds are the best solution for your room.
Once all your roommates have agreed to build a loft, pick
up a copy of the Loft Policy from your community office and follow the guidelines
as you build your loft. You may also view the complete loft
policy online. New residents should be aware that they are likely to
receive unsolicited offers for rental, sale and/or installation of loft
systems after being accepted for admittance to UGA. Please note
that the Department of University Housing does not
endorse any third party vendors of this kind. Residents should act with
caution, especially with any firm requesting cash deposits in advance of
loft delivery/installation.
Finally, every resident is provided with a mailbox for receipt
of U.S. Postal Service mail. Most students have their own private mailbox, but some residence halls require students to share a mailbox. Your mailbox is located in the residential
community in which you live. You may also receive packages, which are held
for pick-up at the 24-hour desk in your community. Your new mailing address
will be:
Your name
Room #, Hall name
University of Georgia
Athens, GA 30609
