Roommate Matching
The only factors used by the Department of University Housing to assign
roommates are gender, hall and visitation preferences. However, students may
choose to indicate a specific individual as a prefered roommate on the housing registration.
Students can remove, change, or add a roommate preference anytime (during
the designated period) after they register for housing by viewing their
registration and modifying their roommate preferences. This allows students
to register for housing and still have time to select a roommate. Only
mutual requests will be considered. More information on the assignments process can be found on the Rules & policies page.
Research on roommate matching has not shown any factors or questions that
can be used to predict better college roommate relationships. Instead, UGA Housing advocates strong communication between roommates and potential roommates in order to help foster cooperation, understanding and mutual respect, as well as to discuss and resolve specific issues before they become a problem. For more information on forging healthy, positive roommate relationships please visit our Roommate Relationships page.
Looking for a Roommate? Visit the Dawg House!
If you are (1) an incoming student, and (2) have registered for housing online, you are welcome to utilize the Dawg House roommate search system.
The Dawg House was created to provide incoming first-year students with the ability to build a basic personal profile based on a variety of questions, as well as weigh the relative importance of each point. Examples include:
- Do you smoke?
- What college of the University do you plan to be affiliated with?
- During the week, what time do you usually wake up in the morning?
- During the week, what time do you usually go to sleep at night?
- How neat and clean do you like to keep your surroundings?
- How interested are you in sports? (watching or participating)
- I am interested in applying for a specific academic/speciality community in Housing. (select from list)
A field is also provided for capture of free-form comments by the user.
A Personal Profile is created upon completion of the survey, which students may use to search for other students with similar responses. The Dawg House system will rank potential roommates in order of how closely their answers matched. Use of anonymous usernames ensures that the privacy of all parties will be maintained until each individual agrees to reveal their name and contact information.
Dawg House users also have the option of creating an Ideal Roommate Profile using the same questions. This allows students to search for roommates who have differents goals or characteristics than would be found when conducting a search based on their Personal Profile.
Once a list of potential roommates has been generated using the search options, students have the ability to send a message providing a telephone number and/or email address. The recipient of the contact then has the option to either respond with their own contact information or remain anonymous.
Good Communication = Great Roommates
Just because you answered the questions similarly to a potential roommate, you
still may not see eye to eye on other key issues. We urge you to review the Roommate Relationships page to learn about additional discussion points that you and the other student should discuss and explore before you make your final selections.
Modify your Housing Registration
If you find someone you want to be roommates with, follow the procedures
for modifying your housing registration at the Registration and Contracts page. Once you find a roommate, both
you and your roommate MUST modify your housing registrations before the date indicated on the Registration and Contracts page, to indicate your request. Only mutual requests will
be considered. More detailed information concerning the Dawg House roommate searching
program will be distributed to students as they complete the initial housing
registration online.
