Assignments Policies
This page has more detailed information regarding the assignments process at UGA for
new, incoming students. Current UGA students should click
here for sign-up information.
Assignments Process for New Students
- New applicants are assigned to existing vacancies and the University does not
unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex,
age, disability, or veteran status.
- Students with disabilities must complete the registration process at the
Disability Resource Center in addition to completing the housing registration process. All
requests for specific housing accommodations will be coordinated with the Disability Resource Center. Students with disabilities should complete the housing
registration immediately upon admission and then contact the Disability Resource Center to start the intake process. Click here to visit the web site of the UGA Disability Resource Center.
- All first year students have priority in the assignments process over all other new
students (transfer, graduate, etc.).
- All hall and roommate requests are prioritized in registration date order.
- Housing Assignment is Contingent Upon Acceptance to the University: No
housing assignment will be considered until the student has been officially
accepted to the University by the Office of Admissions.
- Every effort will be made to honor the applicant's preferences. However, as there
may be situations when this is not possible, the University cannot guarantee a
specific assignment.
- Roommate Requests: The following conditions must exist before roommate
preferences can be honored: (1) both students must request each other and (2) a
double occupancy room must exist. When two students request each other as
roommates and register at separate times, the assignment of the roommate pair
will be based upon the LATEST registration date of both students. Applicants
should be aware that if their preferred roommate does not request them or
cancels their registration, they will be assigned another roommate based upon
their individual registration date without notification.
- To secure the initial assignment, a student must execute the Residence Hall
Contract by the deadline specified on the contract.
- SINGLE ROOMS: There are only a few single rooms and these are reserved for
returning students on waiting lists. Since the University cannot guarantee single
occupancy, all new students should expect to be assigned a roommate.
Requests for single rooms may be submitted online, typically on the first day of classes each semester. Contact your
community office for specific details once you have moved into your assigned
space.
- A $35 non-refundable registration fee is required with each registration.
- CANCELLATIONS AND OTHER NOTICES: Cancellations of registrations and/or
reservations, petitions to cancel contracts, and other notices must be submitted
in writing to the University of Georgia, Department of University Housing,
Assignments Office, Athens, GA 30602-5575. (Notices may be submitted by e-
mail to housing@uga.edu or FAX (706)542-8595. Notifications submitted to other
offices do not comply with this requirement and requested official action cannot
be assured.) The date on which notices or petitions are received by the
Assignments Office, or if mailed, the date of the postmark thereon, if earlier, will
constitute the basis for determining compliance with deadlines. Notices to the
student and acknowledgment of receipt of cancellation notices or petitions will be
sent to the student.
- Students participating in special academic programs such as Franklin
Residential College, Learning Communities, Honors Program, Language
Communities, International Student Exchange, National Student Exchange, Rotary, etc
must follow the guidelines established by the program in order to receive
consideration for an assignment with the area(s) designated for these special
groups. Each program has a separate application process and different
guidelines. For more detailed information, check with the special program's
coordinator or contact the Housing Assignments Office at the contact information
listed at the bottom of this page.
