Fellowship Options (top)

Academic Year Symposia Program
This program allows participants to attend three-day symposia held six times over the academic year while also engaging in instructional improvement projects on their home campuses. The symposia include a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities as well as self-directed activities designed to meet individual needs.

Participants receive a stipend for each day of full participation on campus. Meals, lodging, and travel expenses are provided by the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program.

Summer Symposium Program
Participants in this program attend a two-week symposium on the University of Georgia campus. The symposium includes a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities and independent study on the part of each participant.

Participants receive a stipend for full participation in the ten-day symposium. Meals, lodging, and travel expenses are provided by the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program.

Academic Year in Residence Program
This program allows faculty members to study at the University of Georgia for an entire academic year or a single semester. Faculty may enroll in courses-for-credit, design and complete individual learning projects and/or participate in workshops (along with the regular scheduled symposia) designed to enhance professional development and instructional skills.

Participants in the Governor's Fellows Academic Year in Residence Program are expected to receive release-time from their home institution to allow for full-time study on the campus. To help cover tuition costs, living expenses, and release time, participants in the Academic Year in Residence Program receive a stipend for each of the two semesters they are on campus at the University of Georgia.

Eligibility (top)

The Governor's Teaching Fellows Program is designed for faculty members who teach at accredited public or private colleges or universities, other than the University of Georgia, in the state of Georgia. Participants are selected on the basis of their teaching experience, on their interest in continuing instructional and professional development, on their ability to have an impact on their own campus and on a strong commitment by their home institution for release time and other forms of support for the duration of their participation in the program. Any full-time, regular faculty member can apply by doing the following:

With appropriate encouragement and support from one's institutional colleagues, a letter of interest and intent to participate should be sent to the President of the home college or university describing how this program will be of professional benefit to both the individual and to the home institution.

If the President supports the applicant's request, the Governor's Teaching Program requires the following:

  • A letter of nomination from the institution's president
  • The applicant's letter of intent
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • A one to two page philosophy of teaching statement.
