JOURNAL OF HIGHER EDUCATION OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT
In 1905, then Chancellor of the University of Georgia Walter Barnard Hill said this about the role of the university of the future: "The University of the twentieth century will be differentiated from its predecessors in this: it will connect its activities more closely with the business and life of the people." This statement rings true for the University of the twenty-first century as well. The Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE) is dedicated to carrying that ideal forward.
JHEOE is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that seeks to advance knowledge and theory about the social roles and civic missions, practices, and contributions of academic institutions and their governing boards, faculty, staff, and students. It strives to be the journal of record for high-quality scholarship that critically examines a broad range of issues, challenges, and opportunities related to the pursuit of higher education’s public purposes and work. In addition to advancing research, JHEOE seeks to highlight and examine innovative practices and programs and emerging issues, trends, challenges, and opportunities in the field of community-higher education engagement. It seeks to do so for an audience that includes not only faculty members, administrators, civic leaders, and policymakers, but also the diverse publics they serve.
JHEOE welcomes submissions from both scholars and practitioners, and is open to a wide variety of disciplines and methodological approaches. Articles are published in each of the following categories:
- Research and Philosophical Inquiry - We seek high-quality research and philosophical inquiry articles on a broad range of issues and problems associated with community-higher education engagement. Articles that address practical, theoretical, historical, philosophical, epistemological, methodological, economic, political, and/or cultural issues and problems are all welcome.
- Practice Stories from the Field - Critically reflective narratives of practitioner experience and work associated with community-higher education engagement and partnerships, public scholarship, and, more generally, the public work of higher education, well-grounded in philosophical, historical, and theoretical contexts and analysis, are welcome.
- Critically Reflective Reviews and Essays - We also seek concise, constructive, critically reflective and analytical reviews and essays on current, emerging, and possible future trends, perspectives, issues and challenges associated with community-higher education engagement, public scholarship, and institutional change.
- Book Reviews - We publish timely reviews of current and new books that address philosophical, historical, theoretical, and practical matters associated with community-higher education engagement and the practice of public scholarship. Reader suggestions for books to review are welcome.
