Criteria for Review and Selection

Articles are evaluated on the following points: introduction and importance of the topic; significance of article in adding new understandings of community-higher education engagement; organization of ideas; writing style and read-ability; and by additional criteria based on the following manuscript orientations: as a research article, as a conceptual/philosophical article, as a practice story, as a reflective essay or review, or as a book review.

Guidelines for Contributors

  1. Each submitted article should include a brief abstract (not to exceed 150 words).
  2. All manuscripts must be submitted electronically to and must be formatted in Microsoft Word 2003 or higher. Submission deadlines are January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1 for the spring, summer, fall, and winter issues, respectively.
  3. All tables and figures/graphics must be submitted as individual files or as .jpg files in a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
  4. The review process is "masked," so authors should submit one original with complete information (including abstract, author addresses, and short bio) and one blind copy (including abstract, but no author identifying information) for each manuscript.
  5. Manuscripts submitted to JHEOE must be an original and unpublished work of the authors and must not be under consideration by other publications.
  6. JHEOE style is based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition. This determines such elements as capitalization, hyphenation, use of numerals or spelled-out numbers, and form of parenthetical references. JHEOE's format for references is based on Chicago's specifications for author-date system citation. Endnotes may be used for information inappropriate for inclusion in the body of an article; however, authors are encouraged to incorporate information in the text where possible.
