About the Institute

THE INSTITUTE'S MISSION STATEMENT


To improve postsecondary education policy and practice in the state, region, and beyond, in order to:

  • produce the highest quality policy-relevant research;
  • educate both scholars and practitioners capable of producing and applying such research;
  • provide expertise to help guide postsecondary policy formulation and implementation; and
  • promote the highest quality teaching in Georgia's colleges and universities;
  • support the scholarship and activities of first-rate public service and outreach; and
  • ensure that the Institute of Higher Education will be regarded as the model of excellence in higher education, recognized for its integration of teaching, research and outreach.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF COMMITMENT AND MAJOR GOALS FOR EACH

Curriculum and Student Recruitment

  • Develop a higher education curriculum that produces students who have a positive influence on postsecondary educational policy and practice.
  • Recruit and enroll more full-time degree students from a broader pool (regional, national, and international).

Raising Awareness and Informing Policy Formulation

  • Raise awareness and inform postsecondary policy formulation and implementation.
  • Continuing Professional Education
  • Expand IHE programs in continuing education for personnel in postsecondary institutions, especially in Georgia and the Southeast.

Policy Relevant Research

  • Continue to publish the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement.
  • The Institute should publish annually the top research findings and comparative commentary on policy issues in the state, region, or nation, highlighting the impact on Georgia.
  • Develop a national public policy agenda.
  • Publish and distribute nationally books, monographs, reports, occasional papers, conference proceedings and other publications to promote a better understanding of higher education policy in America.

Enhancing Faculty and Instructional Development

  • Strengthen, extend, and refine the Institute's historic commitment to faculty and instructional development.

Relations with External Groups

  • Develop more effective relationships with external groups
  • Assist those interested in moving the state's higher education agenda forward.

Administration

  • Provide the Institute with the resources necessary to be recognized as the model of excellence in higher education.

These goals and objectives reflect the strength and diversity of the Institute faculty and their commitment to excellence.
