IHEnews Institute of Higher Education
The Greek philosopher and historian Heraclitus said twenty-five centuries ago "No one steps twice into the same river." The Institute of Higher Education is no exception as changes occur each day here in Meigs Hall.
The most dramatic change for us this fall has been adjusting to the departure of Professor Zell Miller. As everyone knows by now, he has been sworn in as a U.S. Senator and will stand for re-election in November. Senator Miller told me recently that he loved his office in Meigs Hall more than any office he had ever occupied, either in Atlanta or Washington D.C. He will be missed, but we will be staying in close touch with him as we plan additional initiatives in higher education at the national level.
One welcomed addition to our faculty this fall is UGA's new Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, Dr. Arthur Dunning. He joins the University after a distinguished career at the Board of Regents in Atlanta. Professor Dunning received his doctorate in higher education from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and served as a faculty member in higher education before coming to Georgia.
Several new staff members joined us for the fall. Dr. Erick Lauber, formerly an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, is now in Meigs Hall and is assisting with various initiatives in instructional technology as well as working with our faculty and students on numerous projects. Mrs. Jean Bowen, formerly the grants officer in the College of Education, has joined us in a part-time position as a consultant. Mrs. Bowen is highly experienced in assisting faculty with proposals and grant application leading to significant external funding. Mrs. Pat Ginn is a new administrative secretary working with Dr. Sylvia Hutchinson and supporting several new collaborative programs in the Institute that connect with the College of Arts and Sciences, Honors Program and other units on campus.
The saddest news of all has been the death of Yvonne Benton on August 16th. Yvonne served the Institute for 23 years and was known by all as a person who cared deeply for others. She was one of the most kind, compassionate, loyal and dedicated human beings that ever lived. She touched the lives of each and every graduate student who came through the program.
The Institute of Higher Education is busier than ever. Building on the deep and rich relationships of the past, our faculty and staff are involved in numerous programs that connect us with other units on this campus, many other campuses in this state and region, and activities that place us in the center of many national issues and endeavors. The fact that the Institute of Higher Education is a "free standing" unit, reporting to the Office of the Vice President for Instruction, and is dedicated to all areas of scholarly endeavorresearch, teaching and serviceprovides us with many extraordinary possibilities. We look forward to another exciting year. Louise McBee Lecture to Be Given by Barbara A. Hedges
This year's Louise McBee Lecture will be given by Barbara A. Hedges, Athletic Director, University of Washington and is entitled "The Value of Sport in Our Society."
John N. Gardner Visits UGA
The Institute of Higher Education and the UGA Teaching Academy are co-sponsoring a campuswide presentation by JOHN N. GARDNER on November 16th at 10:00 a.m. in the UGA Chapel. Dr. Gardner's lecture is entitled "The Undergraduate Bookends: The First-Year Experience and The Senior-Year Experience."
John Gardner serves as Executive Director of the Policy Center on the First Year of College, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, and based at Brevard College. He is also Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership.
The basic mission of the new Policy Center is to work with colleges and universities around the nation to develop and share a range of first-year assessment procedures and tools. Under Gardner's leadership the Center organized: a National Forum on Assessment of the First College Year; two summer institutes on Strengthening the First College Year; and five regional consortia to evaluate the first college year and refine a set of guidelines.
A new survey instrument entitled "Your First College Year" (YFCY) has been released and represents a collaboration between the Higher Education Research Institute and the Policy Center on the First Year of College. YFCY is the only national survey specifically designed to assess student development over the first year of college.

The topic of his presentation will be the Hope Scholarship study.
