DISTINGUISHED VISITORS

During spring 2009, IHE will host three visiting faculty from distinguished international universities. Together, the visiting faculty will offer a graduate course on comparative higher education. Additional seminars will also be offered to students and UGA colleagues. This is but one of the many advantages that contribute to the consistent top ranking given to the doctoral program at the Institute.

Peter Maassen

Director of Hedda, academic coordinator for HEEM, and professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Oslo. His areas of interest are the European dimension of higher education and the role of African universities in democratic and economic development.

Berit Karseth

Academic head of studies at the Institute for Educational Research at the University of Oslo. Her research focuses on knowledge development, curriculum design, institutional culture changes, and professional identity in higher education.

Amy Metcalfe

Assistant professor at the University of British Columbia Department of Educational Studies. She focuses on research policy, comparative studies of international higher education, and academic labor markets.

Picture of Qiao

Another distinguished visitor is Lianquan Qiao, associate professor of higher education at Xiamen University in China. He will spend the 2008-2009 academic year as a visiting scholar at IHE. Qiao is a Ph.D. graduate of East China Normal University, and his visit is sponsored by the China Scholarship Council, where IHE faculty visited in spring 2008. During his year in residence, Qiao plans to audit courses, engage in research, and participate in Institute activities. His visit gives IHE faculty and students the opportunity to learn more about higher education in China as he explores U.S. higher education.

Several other initiatives regularly bring higher education leaders, policymakers, and scholars to the Institute through symposia, seminars, and guest lectureships.
