Senior Priya Chandan has done many of the same kinds of activities as other Foundation Fellows. She was a member of AquaDawgs, UGA’s synchronized swimming team and helped translate Spanish for the Athens ’ Nurses Clinic. She completed lab research with David Puett in the biochemistry and molecular biology department as well as at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Desiree Aranda Smith wants to start a revolution. Focused on the rights of minorities and women, Aranda Smith has founded the group Students for Latino/a Empowerment and helped organize a group to march for women’s reproductive rights in Washington, D.C. She has conducted research in Mexico through a National Science Foundation-funded program, and she also received a summer research fellowship from UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities for a project titled “Projecting a Positive Educational Experience for Latino/as in Georgia.”…

Mareasa Fortunato

Mareasa Fortunato

Mareasa Forunato is going places. She is the president of the Honors Program Student Council and is an Honors Interdisciplinary major in Rhetoric and the Law. She has done an Honors internship in Washington and study abroad in Spain. Most recently, she was one of UGA’s four nominees for the Truman Scholarship. Senior Melina Baetti is the president of the Hispanic Student Association. Under her leadership membership representation has grown to more than 15 countries. The group has co-sponsored events with the Institute for Women’s Studies, the Black Affairs Council and the UGA Alumni Association during Baetti’s term. Brad Lindell

Brad Lindell

Senior Foundation Fellow Brad Lindell has yet to begin medical school, but he is already making contributions to the field. His volunteer work as a medical translation volunteer and as an ESL teacher through Catholic Social Services spurred him to develop a guide for medical professionals as they communicate with people whose native language is Spanish. Nearly 300 copies have been sold to hospitals and medical professionals to date. Lindell has also done Toxoplasma gondii research in the Striepen lab…

Senior Alec Watts is serious about making the world a better place. He is active with the UGA chapter of Amnesty International serving as a general officer and as a Georgia Amnesty International Legislative Coordinator, where his role has been to teach Amnesty International members across the state how to engage in dialogue with their legislators.
