She only had a bachelor’s degree and was competing with applicants who had completed their Ph.D.s when she interviewed to be a Houle Scholar in Latin America. Her background included research with women who had risen to leadership positions in their communities in Colombia through education and other means. Caroline Salter doesn’t horse around. She is a UGA Charter Scholarship Award recipient, and member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. Justin Brown’s contribution to veterinary medicine goes far beyond treating dogs and cats. He is currently working with avian influenza virus, and he is also investigating wildlife diseases to help prevent their transmission to humans and other animals. Lisa Hoffman knows that she can make a difference in the world. She is a senior public relations major and Honors student from Mandeville, La. During a summer internship with the Louisiana Public Health Institute, Hoffman conceived and executed a plan to design and distribute 5-minute phone cards with hurricane preparedness and emergency information on them. Josh Zaffos wants to be a doctor, and his job is giving him a taste of his future. During spring break last year, he worked with the Georgia Eye Bank in Atlanta, and he became fascinated with exactly how valuable the human eye is and how precious vision can be.
