Getting the word out

In the event of an emergency, up-to-date information is provided to Athens radio stations as follows:

• on the AM dial: 880, 960 and 1340; and
• on the FM dial: 88.9, 90.5, 91.7, 97.9, 102.1, 103.7 and 106.1.

Information is posted on University Cable Channel 15, which also is carried on channel 15 of the cable system serving Clarke and Oconee counties.

Information is posted on University Cable Channel 15, which also is carried on Clarke/Oconee cable channel 15.

You may also get it from the UGA home page, www.uga.edu, and more detailed information on the UGAToday Web site, www.uga.edu/news. An all-campus e-mail is sent, although due to volume its delivery may not be immediate.

Please do not telephone the UGA Police, other campus offices, or the news media, as their telephone lines need to be kept open for emergency response.

If you are concerned about a student, please try to call the student directly before seeking information from the residence hall telephone numbers listed below.

As you know, we are in a period of heightened concern about security across the nation. There is no information to suggest that the university is a target of terrorism, and the university will continue to conduct its normal business. Nevertheless, university staff members are maintaining—as they have for many years—our preparedness for any emergency that may affect the university.

University emergency response teams continue regular drills to maintain a high state of readiness. The teams are monitoring information from local authorities, ensuring that we receive timely information on security warnings or alerts. In an actual emergency, UGA’s emergency operations center will be activated to provide central coordination of response and will provide instructions to assist the campus community.

We also have in place a number of mechanisms for emergency communication, in addition to the UGA Web site:

• The UGA emergency telephone information lines contain announcements about the status of the university community: (706) 542-2200

• In an emergency situation, UGA updates will also be provided to local radio and television stations (See “Getting the word out” at right). We will continue to monitor events and take appropriate response measures as needed. However, it is also up to each individual to take responsibility for his or her own emergency preparedness. Stay informed; focus on facts, not rumors; know basic emergency procedures; and keep a disaster kit for your home and family, which is always a sensible precaution.
