IPSO Community Engagement Fellowships for Study Abroad The purpose of the Community Engagement Fellowship program is to encourage UGA students to reach beyond the classroom and to share their international experiences with communities in Georgia through self directed projects with a community partner. The awards help pay expenses related to study abroad programs in developing countries, giving students an opportunity to experience life in those countries and connect classroom experience to real world development challenges.
As part of the Fellowship award, students develop a service project related to their overseas experience after returning to campus, collaborating with a community partner in Georgia to design a program or project that connects the student's academic and international experience to a community need or issue. Community partners could include non-profit organizations, K-12 schools, social service agencies, businesses, or government agencies, and projects are either service-learning, volunteerism, or community service in nature. Reports from 2006 Fellowship Recipients: With funding from the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, this year International Public Service and Outreach awarded three Community Engagement Fellowships to UGA students participating in study abroad programs in developing countries: Ashley Congdon, Jessica Christina Brown, and Eric Fotheringham. Presentations by 2005 Fellowship Recipients: The 2005 CEF recipients' projects included teaching children in Athens elementary schools about African wildlife conservation, making South American crafts and dishes with elementary school students, and conducting a financial literacy workshop for agencies serving Latinos in the Athens area. Another fellowship recipient worked to create a "virtual" development partnership between Birim, South Ghana and Georgia. One student studied homeless programs in Ukraine and shared her knowledge with the Athens Area Homeless Shelter; another student introduced drama classes in Athens to Indian theatre and culture. The seven 2005 fellowship recipients were: Christina Hannon, Jennifer Adams, Linda Chastain, Sallie Jane Fox, Leah Kapa, Ben Liverman, and Yameka Anderson.
