The purpose of Cross-Cultural Studies: Honduras 2007 is to help extension agents and specialists better understand the cultural basis for interacting with Georgia's Latino immigrants and to learn ways to work more effectively with the Latino community. While there will be a special emphasis on the environment in Honduras, the intention is to give participants a broad set of cultural experiences so that they can better understand, communicate with, and ultimately work more effectively with Latinos in Georgia.

Funding for cross-cultural seminar participant travel is provided in part by the USDA-CSREES International Science and Education Competitive Grants Program.

Itinerary

The trip will commence on July 7 and conclude on July 21, 2007. Participants will arrive in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, and proceed directly to Santa Lucia to meet their host families. After a few days in a home-stay environment, rich with language, culture and a local agricultural field trip, participants will return to Tegucigalpa for meetings with the government on urban and rural development issues. Participants will be visiting, among other places:

  • Zamorano University
  • a ranch
  • rural schools
  • social service agencies
  • public health clinics
  • a textile plant
  • other cultural related sites

Objectives

  1. Knowledge of the social issues, culture, and tropical science of Honduras and other Central American countries.
    • Participants will be able to analyze and discuss various social aspects of Honduras and compare these to other Latin American countries as well as the U.S.
    • Participants will be able to compare and contrast Latin American and U.S. educational systems and values associated with these institutions.
    • Participants will be able to integrate various scientific and social concepts learned in a Honduran context into units and topics they utilize in outreach programs in Georgia.
  2. Knowledge of values, thinking and behavior of Latino students, employees and their families.
    • Participants will be able to compare and contrast the range of education and family values in Honduras, other Latin American countries, and the U.S. and interpret these relative to the immigrant populations they work with in Georgia.
  3. Knowledge of how to better assess the Latino community.
    • Participants are expected to use their understanding of Honduran culture to work more effectively with Georgia's Latino community.
  4. Knowledge of agricultural and industrial technologies and issues in Honduras.

Orientation Sessions

Participation in trip orientation sessions in person or by distance learning is mandatory to ensure the success of this program. The orientation session date will be announced in late April or early May.

Registration for this program will be paid by UGA Cooperative Extension and the Office of International Agriculture on behalf of the county extension agents and specialists. The number of registration scholarships is limited so talk to your District Director or Department Head and apply now and no later than January 31, 2007, to participate in this exciting program.

Program costs such as airfare, in-county travel, lodging, and some meals will be included in the registration. Related trip costs such as passport applications, medical fees (i.e., vaccinations and shots), travel to the Atlanta airport and other potential expenses incurred while in Georgia are not included, so please check with your District/Department Head for assistance, if needed.

More about the Program

A set of tentative topics will be woven together throughout all activities in the seminar. While any of the topics below could be the focus of an entire seminar, our aim will be to provide a broad overview for all participants.
