UGA India Roundtable

Thanks to all participants of the first UGA India Roundtable held on January 27, 2009 at the Driftmier Conference Center. It was quite a success! Dr. Brahm Verma, Faculty of Engineering, presided over the Roundtable. Dr. Rob Williams conducted the facilitation session. The Roundtable produced several outcomes and plans for next steps:

  • Thirty-nine faculty and graduate students attended the India Roundtable.
  • A directory of 61 faculty and advanced graduate students with an interest in Indian related projects and activities is available. Download Roundtable Directory >
  • There is already an inventory of 21 projects or activities at UGA involving India available. An abstract of the projects and people involved is attached to this memo. The inventory of projects includes urban planning, conversion of wastes into value-added products, India media outlets, strategic trade control programs, and business management. Dr. Glenn Ames welcomes participants to the Roundtable and sets the context for the session.

RETURN TO
IPSO India Initiative

Rob Williams facilitated the India Roundtable brainstorming session for faculty ideas for the next steps with the India Initiative. The India Committee has summarized these ideas into five broad areas:

  • Create an information system where "materials" related to India can be housed. In the short term, the Inventory of Current and Prospective Projects will be housed on the IPSO and the Faculty of Engineering websites. In the long term a repository of India will be housed elsewhere with links to our website.
  • Curriculum support for India related teaching, research and outreach. The faculty were adamant that UGA must offer courses on Indian history, language (Hindi), government, and international relations. Integrating the Indian content into existing courses is a first step. Curriculum support for Indian related topics will help in recruitment to UGA and support study abroad programs in India.
  • Benefits to the University of Georgia includes recognition of UGA as a resource for economic development, student recruitment, and development work.
  • Evaluation of what peer Land and Sea Grant institutions are doing in India will help us avoid pitfalls and mistakes.
  • Exposure and commitment are very important to the success of the India Initiative. An Advisory Board for the India Initiative will garner us internal and external support. This includes fundraising.

So what's next? How do we keep this momentum going? Based on the roundtable discussions, IPSO and the India Committee will:

  • Continue to prepare for the India Conference on April 2-3, 2009. Please plan on joining us for this exciting event.
  • Host a tentative website to provide a repository of India-UGA projects and directory of faculty working on projects relating to teaching, research and outreach with India.
  • Maintain a UGA-India-RT listserv to provide a communications mechanism for those working on India-UGA projects.
  • Provide information briefings about the India Roundtable and India Conference to the college deans and the vice presidents of instruction, research, and public service and outreach (Drs. Morehead, Lee, and Dunning).

How can you participate and stay involved?

  • Consider participating in one of the task groups relating to the above five areas. Send an email to Deborah Gonzalez to indicate which area group you want to work in.
  • Pass the word on to your colleagues about the India Roundtable so they can sign up to the list serve and stay informed. Send an email to Sarah Stack.
  • Participate on the listserv by posting information about opportunities for instruction, research and public service relating to UGA-India.
  • Email to Deborah Gonzalez an abstract of projects or proposals relating to UGA-India activities to keep the inventory updated.
  • Email to Deborah Gonzalez any other ideas, suggestions, recommendations, etc. that you may have in regards to UGA-India.

Thank you again for your participation in the roundtable and your interest in UGA-India.
