Asha for Education

Asha (Hope) for Education is a secular, non-profit organization that believes that education holds the key to catalyzing socio-economic change in India. This organization, established in 1991, now has grown to include 66 chapters worldwide: 45 in the US, 14 in India and 7 in Europe, Singapore and Australia. In each of these chapters, volunteers take personal interest in identifying education-related projects in India, and supporting them through funds and other means. Thus between 1995 and 2004, AfE has disbursed $6.07 million to 385 projects in different parts on India.

Asha-UGA is a student organization at the University of Georgia, Athens. Through various fundraisers and also through generous contributions made by our donors, Asha-UGA is striving to meet the financial commitment to our current projects: Sandnya Sanwardhan Sanstha (SSS) in Maharashtra and Book Bank project in West Bengal. SSS is a research institute dedicated to the development and rehabilitation of mentally handicapped children. SSS currently has about 82 children at 5 different levels of mental retardedness each requiring different amounts of one on one attention. Till date, Asha-UGA has disbursed a total of $26,000 towards this project.

The book bank project is maintained by the rural development unit of Ramakrishna Mission at Narendrapur. The project aims to aid needy students with textbooks, notebooks, school dresses, instrument boxes, bag, etc. Asha-UGA has made a contribution of $5,500 to date. Moving in this direction, we dream that one day every child in India will have access to basic education! With the involvement of the local community to provide financial support and volunteers, this will soon be a reality. If you share the same dream, learn more about how you can help by visiting www.ashanet.org/athens.
