NAIROBI—A United States trade delegation has begun visiting Kenya to prospect for business opportunities in textile, commercial crafts, coffee, financial services and export of flowers.

Head of the delegation Glen Ames, who is director of International Outreach at the University of Georgia, told reporters here Monday that the group is also seeking investment opportunities in workforce rehabilitation and waste recycling.

Ames said the trade mission is the beginning of a series of business contacts between Kenyan producers and American importers under the US-Africa trade initiative whose aim is to find new markets for east African traders.

Meanwhile, Kenyan Minister for Trade and Industry Mukhisa Kituyi said the US trade mission will enhance the understanding of Kenyan entrepreneurs about US consumer market characteristics, business practices, product distribution and export regulations.

"Kenya exudes confidence that open trade and international investments are the surest ways for Africa to make progress as opposed to aid," Kituyi said.

According to the Kenyan Export Promotion Council, there is an urgent need to diversify the country's exports market to capture the growing US market.
