Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the University of Georgia, and Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela

On January 19, 2004, short stories, games, a pinata, a warm meal and a video about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were highlights of the MLK celebration sponsored by UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and Office of International Public Service and Outreach (IPSO) at the Pinewoods Estates trailer park north of Athens.

The celebration is part of ongoing support CAES and IPSO have provided to a faith-based organization, the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which has established a convent, Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, to minister to the needs of the largely Hispanic commmunity located in Clarke counties. In this partnership, more than 50 UGA students provide after-school tutoring to elementary school children Monday through Thursday. Ms. Anna Scott, a doctoral student in science education coordinates the tutorial program this year.

The celebration was funded by a $5,000 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, a non-profit arm of President Bush's Call to Service initiative. Some of the money was used to buy books and other civil rights-related materials; the rest will go toward buying future materials. More than 120 children and adults gathered at the Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela to learn about the legacy of Dr. King.
