Research into Opportunities for IPSO International Service-Learning: Fiji
Deborah Gonzalez accompanied the South Pacific Study Abroad Program to Fiji in June 2009 and continued with specific research travel. The focus on the trip was to research and explore opportunities for service-learning in an international setting and to test an international service-learning protocol currently being developed for Costa Rica by Kris Irwin of the Warnell School of Forestry. GIACC Reception and Dinner for BIO India Delegation to Atlanta BioCon2009
On May 18, 2009, IPSO co-hosted a reception given by Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce to honor a distinguished group of delegates from India. The purpose of the delegate visit was to participate in the 2009 Bio International Convention where they would be hosting an India Pavilion in order to provide opportunities for information sharing and networking for future collaborative partnerships in biotechnology. Tamar Gabunia, 2009 Muskie Graduate at the University of Georgia
The Office of International Public Service and Outreach hosts international students under the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program (Muskie). Tamar Gabunia, a 2007-2009 Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellow from the Republic of Georgia, received the Graduate Student Award for Excellence in the study of Health Policy and Management from the College of Public Health, University of Georgia, at Commencement on May 9, 2009, a significant recognition of Tamar's hard work at the College of Public Health.

The Muskie Program, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, US Department of State, provides opportunities for Master's level study in the United States to citizens of 12 republics of the former Soviet Union. IREX (International Research & Exchange Board) administers the Muskie Program in partnership with US universities. Eligible fields of study for the Muskie Program are business administration, economics, education, environmental management, international affairs, journalism and mass communication, law, library and information science, public administration, public health, and public policy.


The GIACC visit left delegates inspired and with a desire to learn more about UGA and potential partnerships.
GIACC Visit to UGA
On April 2, 2009, IPSO coordinated a five-member delegation visit from the Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce at the Terry College of Business. The purpose of the visit was to showcase UGA business-friendly resources and commercialization expertise for future partnerships with Indo-American businesses throughout the state. Art Exhibit: "My India: Personal Reflections and Captured Moments"
On Friday, April 3, 2009, the IPSO hosted a reception for an exhibit of photographs taken in India by Professor Farley Richmond and Eric Berg. The reception began with a dance demonstration and performance by Ms. Padmaja Kelam, founder of the Kalaivani Dance and Music Academy, Inc. and concluded with tasty treats. The exhibit was made possible by a generous grant from the Office of Institutional Diversity and supported in part by the University of Georgia Alumni Association. Emily Salguero with IPSO Latin American Artists Series
IPSO hosted a reception at the Georgia Center for Emily Salguero, an Athens photographer who exhibited photos of people she met as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador. This exhibit is part of the IPSO Latin American Artists Series, a partnership with the Georgia Center to present Latino art by Latino artists. IPSO India Conference
"Interconnected Future: India and Georgia" was held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education April 3, 2009. The conference, part of IPSO's India Initiative, was designed to engage the university community with a population of new Georgians who have an economic, social and cultural impact on our state, and included a keynote and luncheon speaker, followed by a cultural performance and a reception. A focus on foreign investment in Georgia from Indian firms and Indo-American business relations for economic development leading to employment and other financial opportunities for Georgia was a specific objective of the conference. IPSO Hosts University of Mumbai Delegation Visit to UGA
Eleven senior academicians from India's University of Mumbai were given a tour of Georgia's flagship institution. The full day of activities and presentations was part of a three-city tour of the U.S. for educational leaders from India at the invitation of the Visitor's Bureau, US Department of State, to Atlanta, New York City and Washington, DC. UGA in Armenia Program Maymester 2009
This three week study abroad and cultural experience program exposes students to the rich cultural, religious and historical heritage of Armenia and geo-political and economic developments in post-Soviet transition economies. The group begins with an orientation at the UGA campus followed by 21 days in Armenia, and will be located in Armenia's capital, Yerevan, with daily field trips to various parts of the country, including visits to international, governmental and non-governmental organizations and domestic businesses.

IPSO hosted an April 23, 2008 reception for the many international students it hosts through the Edmund S. Muskie & Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship program; the Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarship (TIES) program with Mexico; and the Rob Fowler Fund of the Community Foundation for Newton County. M&E Training for Armenian and Georgian Representatives
The Office of International Public Service and Outreach cohosted a two-week training program in January 2007 on project monitoring and evaluation for ten representatives of the State Agrarian University of Armenia, non-governmental organizations, Ministry of Agriculture, and foreign donor agencies from Armenia and Georgia at the University of Georgia. UGA in Armenia 2007 Program Report
The UGA in Armenia program traveled to Armenia Maymester 2007, with four UGA students and four from other U.S. universities. The students represented a wide range of majors—agricultural communications, international business and accounting, economics and history, and social work—who blended together to explore the culture, history, economy, international relations, and politics of this strategic country in the Caucasus Mountains. TIES Phase I Scholarship Recipient Katia Romero Leon Graduates
View photo reports on Katia Romero Leon's 2007 Master's thesis defense and graduation, and her presentation on preliminary findings. Katia is the second scholarship recipient to graduate under the USAID Training, Internship, Exchanges, and Scholarship (TIES) Program Phase I.

TIES Grant Builds Partnership with Mexican Universities for Production of Biofuels
A USAID grant awarded to the University of Georgia will create an educational partnership to share expertise in generating fuels from waste materials with academics and professionals in Mexico's livestock industry. The $250,000 grant was one of five Higher Education Development grants awarded under the USAID Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarships Initiative (TIES) and was formally presented to UGA engineering professor K.C. Megan Sparks
New Graduate Research Assistants at IPSO
Lisette Montoto is currently a doctoral student at the Institute of Higher Education. She holds a Master's degree in Spanish and a dual Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Multinational Business from Florida State University. Montoto is working as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Office of International Public Service and Outreach focusing on projects related to Latin American and Latino initiatives locally.

Megan Sparks is a graduate student in UGA's Master of Public Administration program. She earned her BA in History with honors from Davidson College in 2006, participating in numerous outreach activities including founding an innovative mental health program, serving as a crisis counselor, and managing campus-wide special events. Megan hopes to use her graduate degree and experiences to launch a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to integrated support of mental health, arts and culture, and the environment. Megan contributes to IPSO's IDEAS grant program, outreach programming, and other projects. In addition, she serves as a graduate school senator in the Student Government Association and as secretary of the Georgia Students for Public Administration.

IPSO Community Engagement Fellowships
In 2005, seven UGA students received Community Engagement Fellowships from the UGA Office of International Public Service and Outreach. The awards helped pay for expenses related to study abroad programs in developing countries, requiring each student to develop a service project related to their overseas experience after returning to campus. The Fellowships gave students an opportunity to experience life in developing countries and connect classroom experience to real world development challenges. Throughout the 2005 summer and fall semesters, students have worked on a variety of projects with Athens area partners, including local schools and nonprofit organizations.

U.S. Studies Program for Mexican Students from the Universidad Veracruzana
In January and February 2005, UGA will host students and faculty from Universidad Veracruzana for a U.S. studies program that includes research at the UGA Libraries, English as a foreign language classes, and lectures by UGA faculty on contemporary American culture, role of the media in the U.S., U.S. history, and U.S.-Mexico relations.
