In May 2008, the Office of International Public Service and Outreach hosted Mr. Benon Kalema, newly-appointed head of the Planning Office at Nkumba University, for a one-month self-study program on the topics of "Strategic Planning in Higher Education." Read more and view photo essay.

International Student Achievement Reception
IPSO hosted an April 23, 2008 reception for the many international students it hosts through the Edmund S. Muskie & Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship program; the Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarship (TIES) program with Mexico; and the Rob Fowler Fund of the Community Foundation for Newton County. M&E Training for Armenian and Georgian Representatives
The Office of International Public Service and Outreach cohosted a two-week training program in January 2007 on project monitoring and evaluation for ten representatives of the State Agrarian University of Armenia, non-governmental organizations, Ministry of Agriculture, and foreign donor agencies from Armenia and Georgia at the University of Georgia. UGA in Armenia 2007 Program Report
The UGA in Armenia program traveled to Armenia Maymester 2007, with four UGA students and four from other U.S. universities. The students represented a wide range of majors—agricultural communications, international business and accounting, economics and history, and social work—who blended together to explore the culture, history, economy, international relations, and politics of this strategic country in the Caucasus Mountains. TIES Phase I Scholarship Recipient Katia Romero Leon Graduates
View photo reports on Katia Romero Leon's 2007 Master's thesis defense and graduation, and her presentation on preliminary findings. Katia is the second scholarship recipient to graduate under the USAID Training, Internship, Exchanges, and Scholarship (TIES) Program Phase I.

TIES Grant Builds Partnership with Mexican Universities for Production of Biofuels
A USAID grant awarded to the University of Georgia will create an educational partnership to share expertise in generating fuels from waste materials with academics and professionals in Mexico's livestock industry. The $250,000 grant was one of five Higher Education Development grants awarded under the USAID Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarships Initiative (TIES) and was formally presented to UGA engineering professor K.C. Das on June 13, 2007. Read more here.

Megan Sparks
New Graduate Research Assistants at IPSO
Lisette Montoto is currently a doctoral student at the Institute of Higher Education. She holds a Master's degree in Spanish and a dual Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Multinational Business from Florida State University. Montoto is working as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Office of International Public Service and Outreach focusing on projects related to Latin American and Latino initiatives locally.

Megan Sparks is a graduate student in UGA's Master of Public Administration program. She earned her BA in History with honors from Davidson College in 2006, participating in numerous outreach activities including founding an innovative mental health program, serving as a crisis counselor, and managing campus-wide special events. Megan hopes to use her graduate degree and experiences to launch a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to integrated support of mental health, arts and culture, and the environment. Megan contributes to IPSO's IDEAS grant program, outreach programming, and other projects. In addition, she serves as a graduate school senator in the Student Government Association and as secretary of the Georgia Students for Public Administration.

UGA in Armenia Program May 13-June 3, 2007
This three week study abroad and cultural experience program exposes students to the rich cultural, religious and historical heritage of Armenia and geo-political and economic developments in post-Soviet transition economies. The group begins with an orientation at the UGA campus followed by 21 days in Armenia, and will be located in Armenia's capital, Yerevan, with daily field trips to various parts of the country, including visits to international, governmental and non-governmental organizations and domestic businesses.

IPSO Community Engagement Fellowships
In 2005, seven UGA students received Community Engagement Fellowships from the UGA Office of International Public Service and Outreach. The awards helped pay for expenses related to study abroad programs in developing countries, requiring each student to develop a service project related to their overseas experience after returning to campus. The Fellowships gave students an opportunity to experience life in developing countries and connect classroom experience to real world development challenges. Throughout the 2005 summer and fall semesters, students have worked on a variety of projects with Athens area partners, including local schools and nonprofit organizations.

U.S. Studies Program for Mexican Students from the Universidad Veracruzana
In January and February 2005, UGA will host students and faculty from Universidad Veracruzana for a U.S. studies program that includes research at the UGA Libraries, English as a foreign language classes, and lectures by UGA faculty on contemporary American culture, role of the media in the U.S., U.S. history, and U.S.-Mexico relations.
