The Spring Semester 2008 Family and Consumer Sciences Convocation and Recognition Ceremony was held on May 10, 2008 at the Classic Center in Athens, Ga.

On May 10, 2008, Jose Francisco Diaz graduated with a Master's degree in Housing and Consumer Economics under the direction of Professor Jack E. Houston. Other members of his graduate thesis committee included Julia Marlowe, Glenn C.W. Ames and Charlie Huang. Francisco is the fifth scholarship recipient to graduate under the Training Internships Exchanges and Scholarships (TIES) project entitled "Universidad Veracruzana-University of Georgia: A Partnership for Rural Economic, Educational and Human Capital Development." In addition to his coursework and research at the University of Georgia, Francisco was a teaching assistant for Dr. Marlowe and other professors in the Department of Housing and Consumer Economics. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funds over 60 TIES partnerships linking universities and institutions of higher education in the U.S. and Mexico. Higher Education for Development (HED) in Washington DC administers the TIES program for USAID. Francisco Diaz's parents traveled from Xalapa, Veracuz, Mexico to Athens, GA to celebrate his graduation at the University of Georgia. This was his parent's first visit to the U.S. which they enjoyed very much.
