U.S. Studies Program for Mexican Students from the Universidad Veracruzana UGA International Public Service and Outreach For almost a decade, students and faculty from the University of Georgia have been going to the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) in Xalapa, Mexico, to participate in international study programs at the Mexican university. In a continuation of that academic and cultural exchange, UGA's Office of International Public Service and Outreach (IPSO) will host ten students and five faculty from UV from January 22 through February 9, 2005.
The students are enrolled in a U.S. studies program at UV and will conduct research at the UGA Libraries, attend English as a foreign language classes and attend lectures by UGA faculty on such topics as contemporary American culture, the role of the media in the United States, U.S. history, and U.S.-Mexico relations among others.
"This U.S. studies program of language and culture is a tremendous opportunity to build cultural understanding between Georgians and our nearest neighbor to the south," said Glenn Ames, director of international public service and outreach. "UGA faculty have been leading Maymester study abroad programs at UV to learn about Mexican culture and education, and now we have a chance to share a perspective on U.S. culture and educational systems with their students and faculty. UGA is honored to have been asked to develop this 19-day program." To carry out the program, IPSO will collaborate with UGA's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Office of International Education, the International Center for Democratic Governance and with faculty from the departments of sociology, history, journalism, anthropology and housing and consumer economics. |
