New Graduate Student Orientation

Orientation information for the 2009-2010 school year:

Intent to Register

Please indicate to us by email no later than Friday, June 19, 2009 whether you intend to enroll at UGA for the fall semester. Send an email communicating your intention to polgrad@uga.edu . Be sure to include any changes in your contact information.

International Student Orientation

All incoming International students are required to attend International Student Orientation www.uga.edu/isl on August 3-7 and must also attend Departmental Orientation as described below.

Departmental Orientation

Orientation sessions will be held on August 11-14, 2009. These sessions are mandatory . Advising and registration for fall semester classes will be held. Further instructions will be provided during Orientation. See Orientation Schedule.

Graduate School Orientation
All incoming graduate students should attend the UGA Graduate School Orientation to be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 9:00am at the Athens Classic Center . More information on this event and a checklist for new students (including information on housing and parking) can be found at http://www.uga.edu/gradschool/student/orientation.html .

Assistantship Assignment and Procedures
If you have been awarded a SPIA or Graduate School Assistantship, your assignment will be available at orientation if you do not receive a separate notification by e-mail prior to orientation week.

Each student on an assistantship for the first time will need to complete an online Staff Training Session to fill out the necessary forms for payroll and taxes. The web site is can be found here. Please note, TA/RA positions do not earn employee benefits.

If you will be working as a teaching assistant, you are also required to attend a training session on Thursday, August 13, by the Center for Teaching and Learning, from 8:45-1:00PM in room 101 of the Miller Learning Center. A schedule is available at http://www.ctl.uga.edu/teach_asst/teach_asst.htm .

All teaching assistants are also required to attend training for instruction of Political Science 1101, offered by the Department of Political Science in room 302 Baldwin Hall. See Departmental Schedule. Beginning Fall 2006 all graduate assistants are required to obtain health insurance. See additional requirements and information here.

Classes
Classes will begin on Monday, August 17 . A schedule of important academic dates is available at http://www.reg.uga.edu/or.nsf/html/Academic_Calendar_.

Parking
For parking information, go to the website www.parking.uga.edu . You can download the parking map here: http://www.parking.uga.edu/maps/UGAParkingMap.pdf .

Very important: you must register for parking by July 1 st (date subject to change). If you do not register by this date, you will not be guaranteed a permit.

You will have to choose specific parking lots and rank your preferences. Be sure to note that cost varies by lot location.

.SPIA students tend to choose lots on North Campus (labeled with an "N" before the #) or West Campus north of Baxter St .

Two of the most popular lots among SPIA students and faculty are N06 (North Campus Deck) and N08.

Pay parking lots on campus include all the parking decks and a lot at the Tate Student Center and Ramsey. These will run you no more than $8 a day. Parking permits are quite costly. If you are a part-time student, daily parking may be a less expensive option for you.

Bus service runs all over campus and to many off-campus apartment complexes. However, if you have access to a car, you will probably find it much more convenient to purchase a parking pass.

Bulldog Bucks
Bulldog Bucks is an online account-based debit card program offered to the campus community. Bulldog Bucks are accepted as payment at the Bookstore, Food Services Retail Operations, and at several other on-campus sites. In addition, Bulldog Bucks may be used to pay for copying, printing, vending, and laundry services in the residence halls. You may open an account, make deposits online, and view account activity at www.bulldogbucks.uga.edu . Also, UGA just recently set up a system so that Bulldog Bucks can be used at some stores and restaurants downtown.

Things To Do Before Classes Start

  • Be sure to check your acceptance letter for any documents (i.e., final transcripts, proof of degree, immunization, etc) required before you arrive. These missing documents will prevent you from being eligible to register.
  • Set up your UGA ID and email address online before you come to campus: https://myid.uga.edu/ .
  • Get to the Tate Student Center as soon as possible after you register to get your UGA ID card (charge is about $20). There will probably be signs posted in Tate in August about when the ID card office is open.
  • Request a parking permit from Parking Services, as mentioned above.
  • Explore SPIA and other UGA websites (more information below). Be sure to check out the Fall course schedule and syllabi online to make advising and registration easier.  International Affairs , Political Science.

Advising and Registration
You will receive instructions on making an advising appointment during orientation. International Affairs students will be advised by Dr. Jeff Berejikian.

  • Once you've been advised, see Geneva Foster in 104 Baldwin Hall, for clearance in the computerized registration system (OASIS). Geneva is also your contact for any future problems or questions with requirements and procedures throughout your program as listed below:

Computer Labs
There are two computer labs that are solely for SPIA graduate students. One is in Baldwin Hall (BDAC), and the other is in the Candler Hall computer lab. You will be issued a code to the lab after you arrive on campus. The systems in each lab are different from the main UGA computer system. International Affairs students should contact Anthony McLeod at amcleod@uga.edu to set up personal access to the lab at Candler Hall.
