Summary Timetable for the M.A. Degree

The M.A. requires at least 30 semester hours, including thesis hours.

A full load is 9 hours (12 for those on assistantship, including 1-3 hours of POLS 7005).

M.A. methods requirement is 9 hours: 7010, 7012, 7014.

Summary timetable for the traditional Ph.D. Route: MA from UGA Political Science and International Affairs

The Ph.D. requires at least 30 semester hours beyond the MA, including dissertation hours.

These 30 hours must be taken consecutively. Sixteen of those must be at the 8000/9000 coursework level, excluding 9000 research and 9300 dissertation writing.

Minimum six major courses and four minor courses.

A full load is 9 hours (12 for those on assistantship, including 1-3 hours of POLS 9005).

Ph.D. methods requirement is 3 hours: POLS 7050.

Transfer Ph.D. for students receiving prior graduate training at another institution or degree program:

*Transfer Ph.D.s may be required to take a number of courses or directed readings during the summer of their first year in order to complete the hours necessary for preparation for Comprehensive exams. If a large number of methods courses must be taken (in other words, none are exempted), then Comprehensive exams may be required to be taken in the Spring of the 4thyear to be followed by the dissertation in year 5. For each Transfer Ph.D. student, we will evaluate their prior coursework carefully and systematically plan out their program of study, which will act as a guideline for the student’s graduate work in our program. Note that only a limited number of hours may count as transfer credits.


Summary timetable for the Direct to Ph.D. Route/Fast-track: No prior graduate work.

The Direct to Ph.D. requires at least 45 semester hours, including dissertation hours.

These 34 hours must be taken consecutively. Twenty of those must be at the 8000/9000 coursework level, excluding 9000 research and 9300 dissertation writing.

Minimum six major courses and four minor courses.

A full load is 9 hours (12 for those on assistantship, including 1-3 hours of POLS 9005).

Direct to Ph.D. Methods requirement is 12 hours: POLS 7010, 7012, 7014, and 7050.
