New & Prospective Students - Travel to Georgia
General Information
Once you decide to study at UGA you will need to plan to get your visa, arrange your flight to the U.S. as well as determine how you get to Athens, Georgia. Do not make your flight arrangements to fly to the USA prior to getting your student visa from the embassy. Also, be sure to carry your immigration documents with you onto the plane! These documents are valuable and can be difficult and expensive to replace. Sometimes bags that are loaded into the plane can be lost between connections. It is a good idea to make extra copies of your immigration documents and your passport before you leave home just in case they get lost or stolen during your travels.
In preparing to travel you should be aware that there are many foods that cannot be carried into the USA. There are places in Athens and Atlanta where international students can purchase traditional foods. Please make certain that you don’t bring illegal food into the U.S. by mistake. If you are thinking about bringing food with you, please talk to your travel agent or airline concerning food or any other restrictions.

ISL Pickup Information (Airport, Bus, Shuttle, etc.)
ISL provides complimentary pickup service for new and transfer international students coming to study at UGA. We can pick UGA international students up from various Athens locations and help them get to their permanent housing and/or the UGA campus. ISL usually begins the Athens pickup service a few days before the ISL orientation date(s). Unfortunately, we are not able to offer pickup service for individuals arriving to locations outside of the Athens area.
Contact ISL at least 2 weeks (10 business days) in advance in order for us to have enough time to make arrangements for your pickup. Students who do not give the office at least two business days notice in advance of their arrival may not be eligible for this service. After receipt of your request, students will receive an email confirmation once the office has made the appropriate arrangements for your pickup.
Once again, this service is free for new and transfer international students. However, individuals who cancel their confirmed pickup without notifying the ISL office in a timely fashion may be charged a fee to cover the expenses incurred for this service.
If you would like to schedule an Athens Pickup with the ISL office, please email ugaisl@uga.edu with the following information:

Travel to Athens or Atlanta, Georgia
To Athens
By car, Athens is approximately 80 miles (or 127 km) from Atlanta. There is no train service to Athens from the nearest major airport – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Therefore, students may wish to consider taking a connecting flight to fly into Athens Ben Epps airport. If you do fly to Athens, ISL offers a free Athens Pickup service for new and transfer international students. See the Athens Pickup section below [link to Athens Pickup section] for more information concerning this free service.
To Atlanta
You may need to fly into Atlanta instead of Athens. Unfortunately, if you fly to Atlanta, ISL cannot coordinate pickup service at the Atlanta airport. However, there may be other options for students who are interested. Visit the Atlanta Pickup section of this Web site for more information. While some students from our international student organizations may be able to pick you up at the Atlanta airport, many of you will have to find transportation from Atlanta to Athens on your own.
