Hi Dr. Godlas, I ran into you briefly last summer in Morocco. You were traveling with Gray Henry from Casablanca to Marrakech and we talked for just a few minutes before boarding the plane. I work on the Islamic Translation Series at BYU and have just finished a PhD on al-Ghazali's Iqtisad fi al-I'tiqad at the University of Utah.

Islam will never be taken seriously until it stops oppressing women and recognises both sexes as equals. Until then the religion will be quite rightly persecuted, just as it persecutes women.
...and yes, assigning different 'roles' in life for each of the sexes does obviously constitute oppression and persecution.
Would 'roles' be allowed for each of the different races? If not then why is it justified for each of the different sexes?

Please can all brothers and sisters of the Muslim community think about how they demonstrate. violence, threatening remarks on banners is not the right way to go about it. if in doubt speak to someone with a little more knowledge that can advise you on how to express your views. remember Islam is a peaceful religion like most others therefore we must as Muslims retain this peace.

I visited because of your Women in Islam link, and was somewhat surprised to read a blurb that could have been written by Amina Wadud, but did not see any reference to her work.
