Conference on “Maritime Communication & Islamic
Culture”
Organized by the Fujian Maritime Silk Route Research
Association and Quanzhou Maritime Museum and co-sponsored by China Maritime
History Studies Association, Fujian Academy of Social Science and Fujian Cross-Strait Cultural Research
Association, the conference on “Maritime Communication & Islamic Culture”
will be held in June 2008 in Quanzhou, Fujian.
The conference
provides an opportunity for scholars to assess China’s maritime history studies and explore
new findings. It will focus on the political, economic and cultural relations
between ancient China and Arabian & other Muslim
countries. Topics of interest include maritime communication and the spread and
influence of Islamic civilizations (including navigation science &
technology, medicine, literature, architecture, philosophy, religion, folklore,
etc.) during the era of “Maritime Silk Route.” The impact of the Muslim countries
on Chinese science, technology and culture will be discussed. The conference
will also examine the early settlement of Arabian and Persian Moslem merchants
in the southeastern coastal areas of China. Of particular interest are the
study of the families of Moslem descent who migrated to Taiwan after the 17th century,
and the Islamic relics in both Mainland China and Taiwan.
