Core Faculty: Patricia Bell-Scott

Dr. Patricia Bell-Scott, Professor of Child and Family Development and Women's Studies, received her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and has been involved in women's studies for nearly three decades. At UGA, she teaches an undergraduate course on Women in the Family and Society and a graduate seminar on Black Women's Narratives. She specializes in black women's auto/biographical writing and women's developmental issues.

Dr. Bell-Scott was founding editor of SAGE: A Scholarly Journal on Women and has been a contributing editor to Ms. Magazine. She has published several books, including Life Notes: Personal Writings by Contemporary Black Women, Double Stitch: Black Women Write About Mothers and Daughters, and Flat-footed Truths: Telling Black Women's Lives (with Dr. Juanita Johnson-Bailey). Her first book, But Some of Us Are Brave: Black Women's Studies, co-edited with Gloria T. Hull and Barbara Smith was named to the list of "Books that Made the Century Great" by Black Issues Book Review. She is also the recipient of numerous awards for her scholarship and service to women's studies from the Association of Black Women Historians, the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, and the National Council on Family Relations. Her forthcoming book is a biography of the political friendship of Pauli Murray and Eleanor Roosevelt.
