Carson Coley Lectur April 19, 2002 at the Georgia Museum of Art

of Outsiderness."
Nancy Bereano started Firebrand books in 1984, and
it became one of the most successful lesbian/feminist presses in
the world. Firebrand established a reputation for passionate, innovative
works by women of all colors, sexualities and gender identities.
Firebrand won 11 Lambda Literary Awards and 4 American Library Association
Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Book Awards. The press published works
such as Alison Bechdel's "Dykes to Watch Out For" and titles
by Audre Lorde, Dorothy Allison, Barbara Smith, Leslie Shay Youngblood,
Cindy Patton, and Minnie Bruce Pratt, among others.
On January 1, 2001, Firebrand was sold to the LPC Group, its distributor.
LPC will keep the Firebrand backlist in print, and Nancy Bereano
will retain an option to do future books, as she begins a career
of freelance manuscript editing and consulting work.
The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture was endowed by a donation by Dr.
and Mrs. P. Andrew Coley in memory of his daughter Andrea Carson
Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in the Women's
Studies Program. Each year, the Andrea Carson Coley Lecture brings
to campus scholars who are doing cutting-edge research in the field
of lesbian and gay studies.
The Women's Studies Program is honored to have Nancy Bereano as
our 2002 Andrea Carson Coley Lecturer. This year's lecture will be
April 19 at 12:20 in the M. Smith Griffeth Auditorium in the Georgia
Musem of Art on the University of Georgia campus. A reception honoring
the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30. |
