2003 Andrea Carson Coley Lecture: Dr.
Shirlene Holmes
Dr. Shirlene Holmes will deliver the 9th annual Andrea Carson
Coley Lecture April 4, 2003 at the Georgia Museum of Art
"Writing With Pride: Theatre as an Agent for Social Change
& Lesbian and Gay Activism."
Dr. Shirlene Holmes is an associate professor of
communication at Georgia State University. She has taught courses
in speech, theatre, women's studies and African-American studies
since 1989. Dr. Holmes is an accomplished artist, educator, and
community leader.
Her creative writing has been published in literary magazines and
anthologies. Her plays have been produced on local, national, and
international stages.
In July 2002, Dr. Holmes spent a week as a playwright-in-residence
at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her play, Daughters, will
be produced in the Alumni Hall Theatre at Georgia State University
in November 2002.
Dr. Holmes is deeply committed to raising social conscoiusness.
She is commited to self and community empowerment. Dr. Holmes is
on the ministerial staff of Hillside Chapel and Truth Center in Atlanta.
She is an ordained minister.
The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture was endowed by a donation
by Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter Andrea Carson
Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in the Women's
Studies Program. Each year, the Andrea Carson Coley Lecture brings
to campus scholars who are doing cutting-edge research in the field
of lesbian and gay studies.
The Women's Studies Program is honored to have Dr. Shirlene Holmes
as our 2003 Andrea Carson Coley Lecturer. This year's lecture will
be April 4 at 12:20 in the M. Smith Griffeth Auditorium in the Georgia
Musem of Art on the University of Georgia campus. A reception honoring
the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30. |
