Athens, Ga. – Dr. Chris Cuomo, Director of the Institute for Women’s Studies and Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies at UGA, will give the 13th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture on “Religion and the Right to Be Gay,” on Friday, April 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium in the Georgia Museum of Art. A reception honoring the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30 a.m. in the GMOA lobby. Dr. Cuomo’s research focuses on ethics, feminist philosophies, race, sexuality, environmental ethics and art. A life long activist, she is also the author of The Philosopher Queen: Feminist Essays on War, Love & Knowledge, which was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and an American Philosophical Association Book Award in 2003, Feminism and Ecological Communities, a key text in eco-feminist philosophy, and numerous scholarly essays on ethics and contemporary political life. Her most recent book, The Feminist Philosophy Reader, will be published in August of 2007. Along with the work on LGBT rights that she will be presenting in the Coley lecture, her other current research involves indigenous knowledge concerning climate change in Northern Alaska.

Before coming to UGA in 2006 Dr. Cuomo was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cuomo has been awarded grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the Charles Phelps Taft Center.

The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture in Women’s Studies was endowed through a donation made by Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in Women's Studies. Each spring, the lecture brings to campus scholars doing cutting-edge research in the area of lesbian and gay studies.

Women's Studies is honored to have Dr. Cuomo as our 2007 Andrea Carson Coley Lecturer. This year's lecture will be April 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the M. Smith Griffith auditorium, located in the Georgia Museum of Art on the University of Georgia campus. For more information contact Molly Moreland Myers.
