Steve Dancz and The UGA Jazz Band will appear in concert on Tuesday, November 18th, and will feature music written and performed by some of the biggest names in jazz, including two dukes and a count. Duke Ellington's "C Jam Blues"(also known as "Dukes Place"), Count Basie's "One O' Clock Jump," and Horace Silver's "Song For My Father" will be performed, featuring some of the top jazz soloists from the UGA Jazz Program.
The creative work of a 'local Georgia hero' from the jazz world will also be on the program. Duke Pearson was born in Atlanta (8/17/32) and moved to NYC in 1959 to became one of the top arrangers and producers in jazz during his tenure with Blue Note Records. Steve's father Roger Dancz, director of bands at UGA (1955-1991) and a notable jazz musician, met Duke when they served in the military, playing music together in the 3rd Army band at Ft. McPherson--they remained friends until Pearson's death in 1980 from multiple sclerosis. Steve Dancz was in his early teens when his father took him to Atlanta to meet Duke and hear him perform--Steve remembers the bond of friendship between the two men and the remarkable talent that Duke Pearson possessed.
The UGA Jazz Band will perform a Duke Pearson composition entitled "Minor League," originally recorded on Pearson's 1968 Blue Note release Now Hear This! Featured on that album is trumpeter Marvin Stamm, an internationally known jazz player brought to the UGA campus in recent years by Hodgson School of Music professor Fred Mills.
The UGA Jazz Band was last heard on campus as they prepared to leave for Beijing as they accompanied Governor Sonny Perdue and a delegation of industry, education and business leaders as part of the Governor's Trade Mission to China.
To hear the music of Georgian Duke Pearson is always a pleasure and the connections between the UGA campus and Mr. Pearson will be on display when the UGA Jazz Band performs on November 18th in Ramsey Hall, beginning at 8:00 PM. The concert is free--we hope you can join us!
