Fall 2009 Schedule

We meet Monday and Wednesdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Ramsey Center Martial Arts room (located on the 2nd floor).

Beginners are welcome at any point in the semester, and membership is open to any UGA student, faculty or staff member. You are welcome to observe practice or contact any of the officers for more information.

Beginners should wear comfortable exercise clothing or a judogi (if you own one). We recommend clothing that protects your knees and elbows and ones that you won't mind getting stretched out. Shoes are removed for practice. All equipment is provided.

What is Kashima Shinryu?

Kashima-Shinryu is a traditional Japanese martial art (koryu) that has been passed down for almost 500 years through 19 generations of master instructors. Kashima-Shinryu preserves the fighting techniques and martial insights of the warriors of medieval Japan. The art is comprised of a mixture of mental and physical techniques designed to aid a student in any weapon or unarmed situation.

Practice at UGA focuses on the primary arts of kenjutsu (swordsmanship) and jujutsu (unarmed self-defense). Beginning students will learn the fundamental techniques and ideas behind Kashima-Shinryu using bokuto (wooden swords) and fukuro shinai (bamboo swords) as well as bare handed techniques for jujutsu. Students are also introduced to several related arts, such as Battojutsu (sword drawing), Kaikenjutsu (use of daggers and knives), Sojutsu (spearmanship), Bojutsu (use of long staves), Shuriken-jutsu (the art of throwing darts), and Naginata-jutsu (use of the Japanese halberd or glaive).

For more information on Kashima-Shinryu, please visit the Kashima-Shinryu Federation's website at www.kashima-shinryu.jp or check out Karl Friday's book Legacies of the Sword: The Kashima-Shinryu and Samurai Martial Culture (1997).

Thank you for your interest in Kashima-Shinryu, and we look forward to seeing you at practice!
