The Ocean and You
I hope you now better understand the origin of our oceans and the life that exists there, as well as the problems that could change it forever. But talking about the oceans is sometimes hard to comprehend. The oceans are so vast. You may ask yourself, " How does this affect me?"
As we have seen in this web site,over-fishing could cause many types of fish to become extinct. If that happens not only would you not be able to have a tuna fish sandwich for lunch, but the entire marine ecosystem would be disrupted by the loss of key componets. One oil spill can kill thousands of plant and animals on huge scales. Pollution from large corporations runs into rivers and eventually into the ocean, throwing off its delicate chemical balance. Global warming could melt the polar ice caps causing massive flooding around the world. These issues do affect you, as they affect every living thing on this earth. So next time you stand on a beach or see pictures of the ocean, think about what you have read here and remember that we hold the fate of the oceans in each of our hands.
