About the course: The Global Engagement Learning Community meets weekly to explore cultural issues, the meaning of global citizenship, and the fundamentals of service learning. The seminar focuses on these issues by encouraging participation in local events, exhibits and lectures on campus, along with volunteer experiences. The process of discovery is framed by an understanding of urban spaces and how people use them. Concentration is placed on local and global heritage preservation and resource conservation programs and initiatives.

About the lead instructor: Pratt Cassity is Director of the Center for Community Design and Preservation in the School of Environmental Design.  His expertise encompasses both Historic Preservation and Landscape Architecture and his office provides assistance to state agencies in a variety of these areas.  With an interest in global service-learning, he works extensively on public service programs in preservation and community planning in the United States , Eastern Europe and West Africa .

About this section: The Life Sciences Learning Community is intended for students considering a major in an area of the biological sciences.  The seminar format highlights a weekly public research seminar by visiting experts followed by a class discussion to focus on research methodology, the broad significance of the findings, aspects of effective public speaking, and avenues for additional learning.  This seminar enhances understanding of the many relations of science to society, and the opportunity and responsibility to harness science for the benefit of mankind.

About the lead instructor: Marcus Fechheimer studies cell structure and movement, and changes in cell structure associated with neurodegenerative diseases. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Alzheimer's Association, and he is a member of UGA Teaching Academy Class of 2002.

About this section: Nutrition and Health. Why is nutritionimportant in today society?  This course will examine how nutrition affects health and life in general. The seminar format will highlight visiting experts as well as presentation of articles (including popular stuff) about today's science followed by a class discussion of the relationship between nutrition and health. This seminar will enhance the understanding of the many relations of nutritional science to society, and the opportunity and responsibility to develop an in service learning project that benefits society.

About the lead instructor: Silvia Giraudo is originally from Argentina. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and her post-doctoral studies from the University of Minnesota. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Foods and Nutrition in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences where she teaches courses in Human Nutrition and Nutrition and Health. Her research program is in the area of Food Intake Regulation and Obesity.

About the course: The Film and Stage Learning Community is intended for students who enjoy reading and performing. Potential majors in English, other literature departments (including comparative literature), drama, or film studies might enjoy it, as will students who have an avocational interest in literature and performance.

Indian Arts and Culture: This course investigates the arts of India and their interconnectedness. We explore music, dance, dance-drama, theatre, puppetry, and the fine arts.  A concert by classical south Indian musicians and Indian dancers are highlights of the experience. Even film will play a part.

About the lead instructor: Since 1964 Dr. Richmond has been conducting research on Indian theatre, particularly on the Sanskrit theatre of India. He has led groups of faculty and students to India over the years investigating music, dance, theatre, and puppetry, as well as writing about these subjects. He has also directed Indian classical and modern plays.

About the course:  Cinemusic. Love the movies?  Love the music?  This course will examine the development of music for the cinema, learn about composers and their techniques, and most importantly sample the experience of movie-music fusion.

About the lead instructor: Stephanie Tingler is Associate Professor and Chair of the Voice Area in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.  She has performed in opera, oratorio, recital and musical theater throughout the midwest and southeast, Brazil , Great Britain, and Japan.

About the course: Financial Issues and Pathways to Leadership:  During the fall of 2008, the Presidential election will focus the nation on current economic issues and the leadership needed to address present and future challenges.  For individuals, the economic dimension often begins with personal finance, impacted by developments at national and global levels.  Learning community members will study a range of contemporary issues affecting their personal financial futures and consider their potential for leadership for positive change.

About the course: The Lawyer’s Dilemma: Advocacy vs. Legal Ethics. This seminar will focus on a genre of ethical and legal issues through class discussions, speaker presentations, case studies, and participation through role play scenarios.

About the lead instructor: Teresa A. Angle is the Pre-law Advisor and Program Director for the Prelaw Advising Office at the University of Georgia. She received the Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland, School of Law. She served as Assistant Attorney General for the state of Missouri and as Assistant State’s Attorney in Baltimore County, Maryland, prior to opening a private practice specializing in criminal defense and child custody issues. She also made herself available as a Panel Attorney for various counties in the State of Maryland. She has more than 20 years practicing law before retiring in 2005.

About the course: Agriculture is Georgia’s leading industry.  To retain this position, strong future leadership is needed.  However, leadership is rarely innate, rather it is learned through exposure to others already in leadership positions, as well as “on the job training.”  This class will link freshman students interested in agricultural leadership with current agricultural leaders at the University and across the State of Georgia.

About the lead instructors:
Scott Angle is the Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.  As Dean and Director, he is responsible for assuring that the citizens of the state have the needed knowledge, training, and research for agriculture in Georgia to remain successful, and to assure that the quality of our environment is protected.  In his spare time, Dean Angle enjoys cooking and mowing grass on his farm.  Josef Broder is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor.   Dr. Broder provides leadership to the Deans’ Promise activities for the college including study abroad, internships, service learning, undergraduate research and leadership development.  A native of Switzerland, Dr. Broder enjoys international travel and photography.
