The University
of Georgia offers a wide array of exciting learning programs
based in the residence halls. Participation in these
programs gives students the opportunity to blend their
residential and academic experiences and thereby enhance
the overall quality of their college life. Importantly,
each program provides students with an opportunity to live
together with other students who share a common interest. Each
program has a distinctive character and is housed in a
different residence hall. Incoming first-year students
may be particularly interested in the new First-Year
Residential Learning Communities.
First-Year Residential Learning Communities
The
First-Year Residential Learning Communities began in the
2004-2005 academic year. Each
Learning Community has a distinctive academic theme, which
allows a small group of students to explore an area of
interest together. Every Learning Community is led by
an outstanding individual faculty member. Small groups
of twenty incoming students take classes together, with
three related courses in the fall and a seminar incorporating
a service-learning project in the spring. Students are
placed together by individual Learning
Communities, with a majority being housed in Creswell Hall. To discover the exciting First-Year Residential
Learning Communities planned for the 2008-2009 academic
year, check out this link: http://www.uga.edu/learningcommunities/program/2008-2009_outline.htm

The Freshman College
Summer Experience is a program that gives entering students
a great early
start on their academic career at UGA. The program not
only offers six credit hours of excellent courses, but
also a rich array of co-curricular activities, along with
an opportunity to get acquainted with a faculty mentor
in a small group. The program is housed in Russell Hall
and students who participate in the Freshman College
Summer Experience remain together in Russell
Hall during
their first year at UGA. Find out more from the website: http://freshmancollege.uga.edu/
Franklin Residential College
The
Franklin Residential College serves to create a close-knit,
small college environment
within a large research university. The residential college
is comprised of 150 students from all undergraduate classes,
first-year to fourth-year. The college is housed in Rutherford
Hall and features a faculty member in residence who
serves as dean. Student self-government is a distinctive
characteristic of the Franklin Residential College, where
residents organize
a wide range of intellectual, social, and service activities. Find

French and Spanish Language Communities
The
French and Spanish Language Communities provide a simulated
immersion environment through
which students can explore the richness and variety of
French-speaking and Spanish-speaking cultures. A wide
array of shared activities allows students to have an immersive
experience, in addition to the conversational classes that
are based right in Mary
Lyndon Hall, where the program
is housed. Applicants may include any student, incoming
or already enrolled at UGA, who has studied French or Spanish
at the intermediate level. Find out more from their website: http://www.rom.uga.edu/langcomm/

wonderful programs is right for you? Check
out their websites and explore how the right residential
program can contribute to enhancing your college experience. It's
about living and learning together. Just
be aware that, because each program is housed in a
