DO WE DARE TO TALK ABOUT GAY ISSUES IN OUR SCHOOLS?
November 9, 2000
Noon-1:30pm
Room 112, Aderhold Hall
presented by
Nancy McNair, Chairperson
AIDS Coalition of Northeast Georgia
Using the award-winning video, "It's Elementary,"
this discussion will
focus on how some teachers have dealt with gay issues in their
classrooms. The video demonstrates methods used and portrays vividly
the reactions of children and parents. Other issues raised include
what happens to gay kids when the topic is ignored, and the impact of
schools on the children of gay or lesbian parents. The difficult
dilemmas for teachers and the negative reactions which may occur are
also made clear.

Pamela Orpinas & Dawn Satterfield, Department of Health, Promotion & Behavior"Walking in the Wisdom of the Past for Wisdom in the Future: Native Americans in Georgia" is an educational video on Native American
cultures and was developed with funds from the COE Multicultural Education Grant obtained by Ms. Dawn Satterfield and Dr. Pamela Orpinas, Department of Health Promotion and Behavior, and in conjunction with the NE Georgia Native American Society. The video provides an interesting blend of history and current day Native American cultural information for Georgia's third through fifth graders, but is considered appropriate for use with older populations, as well, and is supplemented by a teachers guide. Excerpts from several Georgia Department of Natural Resources videos are included in the historical overview as well as tribal customs and rituals are experienced through a visit to a local Pow Wow. The video beautifully demonstrates some of the contributions of Native American culture to our daily lives. Join the presenters in previewing this 33 minute video and then share in the discussion to follow.![]()
